Experts have made a disturbing discovery in Antarctica which holds an active methane leak.
Antarctica has up to a quarter of the planet's marine methane - a greenhouse gas that is more dangerous than carbon dioxide.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) accounts for 72% of the global human-caused emissions. After being released into the atmosphere, about 40% of stays for 100 years, while 20% remains after 1000 years, and 10% up to 10,000 years.
Meanwhile, methane (CH4) stays for less time in terms of greenhouse gas effects. Its global warming impacts are 25 times larger in 100 years. It accounts for 16% of man-made greenhouse gas emissions.
If Antarctica continues to warm, methane that is trapped under age-cold ice could escape into the atmosphere, triggering rapid climate change.
