More than 400 internet lockdowns in India

Including the world's longest internet shutdown, which was reported in India's Jammu & Kashmir for 233 days after the abrogation of Article 370 in the state, J&K saw the highest number of internet cutoffs during the year 2020. The data shows that India saw 134 internet blackouts in 2018, followed by 106 in 2019, and 83 in 2020.

According to a Software Freedom Law Center's tracker, net cutoffs in India have increased 27 times from 2012 to 2020, from 3 to 83, totaling 467 blackouts. Due to farmers' protests against the new farm laws in the national capital, the center has suspended internet in the region, the first case of internet shutdown of 2021.

In the year 2020, India was the most economically impacted country from 8,927 hours of internet blackouts costing $2.8 billion to the economy, eight times costlier than the second most impacted country, Belarus, the only European country with the communist regime.
